Disabled Refuge
What is Disabled Refuge?
A disabled refuge may be defined as a location or safe place where persons who cannot easily use fire escapes and lifts can call for help and remain until assistance arrives.
Communication systems in these areas are known as Emergency Voice Communication (EVC) Systems. The design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of these systems are governed by British Standards 5839:2003 Part 9. These standards identify two types of EVC system, namely Disabled Refuge and Fire Telephone.
At Guardian Fire & Security, we can supply, install and commission EVC systems to suit all types of premises both large and small.
The SigTEL range of EVC provides a fully compliant and cost effective solution for all disabled refuge and fire telephone requirements.

SigTEL Controllers:
The SigTEL Master Controllers are available in 4 (ECU - 4) or 8 (ECU – 8) line capacity. Both are wall mounted and are normally positioned in a buildings control room or next to the main Fire Alarm panel. The Master Controller allows management or the fire services to communicate with the outstations. The 4 line unit can be connected with up to 4 outstations and the 8 line with up to 8 outstations.
For larger premises, an 8 line Expansion Unit is available and this can be connected to the ECU – 4 or ECU -8 Master Controllers to increase its line capacity to 12 or 16 lines respectively.
In addition, Network Communication Cards allows for up to 4 Master Controllers plus any expansion units to be interconnected therefore providing a capacity of up to 64 lines/outstations.
